Universal Design Learning Management System (UDLMS)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles for designing curriculum that provides all individuals with equal opportunities to learn. UDL provides a blueprint for designing goals, methods, materials, and assessments to reach all students including those with diverse needs. Thus UDL is an approach to learning that addresses and redresses the primary barrier to learning: inflexible, one-size-fits-all curricula that raise unintentional barriers. Unlike adaptive solution this approach offers equal opportunity to access content of all different modalities.

The UDL framework is grounded in three principles:
1. Multiple means of representation.
2. Multiple means of action and expression.
3. Multiple means of engagement
The main idea of this proposal is to develop a web-based system based on the UDL philosophy. The system will act as Learning Management System (LMS) that will not only provide a platform for multi-modal content presentation (principle No.1) but it will provide equal opportunity to the learner to express their responses in multi-modes (principle No.2). Although the UDL approach indirectly addresses the third principle of UDL however the proposed platform will include reviews corner of the learners about the topics they have learned and they appeared have appeared for examination.

The proposed system will consists of three modules:
1. Multimodal Content Presentation
2. Multimodal Expression for Assessment
3. Engagement monitoring using reviews.

The proposed system will offer following spectrum of multimodalities for models 1 and module 2:
1. Text
2. Image (uploading, drawing image using application based drawing pad, uploading)
3. Audio (recording, uploading, storing and downloading)
4. Video (recording, uploading, storing and downloading)
5. Other content (PowerPoint, e-books)

Scope: The content repository will not be so rich. Hence the content will consist of 4-5 topics (from CS) only (covering all said modalities for both module 1 and 2). It is very hard to perform auto-assessment in case of image, video, audio and even in case of text when the responses are subjective. So the proposed system will not include the auto-assessment of the responses.
